ST85MM Leads Next-Generation Smart Meter Communication Solutions, Accelerating Energy Industry Transformation

The company recently launched its new Power Line Communication (PLC) modem, the ST85MM. This future-proof, programmable solution not only supports the latest Meters and More and PRIME 1.4 standards, but also brings unprecedented flexibility and adaptability to the smart meter market.

ST85MM Technical Features and Benefits

STMicroelectronics' ST85MM, leveraging its built-in programmable digital signal processor (DSP) and Arm® Cortex®-M4 core, offers the flexibility to run either the Meters and More or PRIME protocols. It also integrates a complete PLC analog front-end and an advanced encryption engine to ensure secure data transmission. The ST85MM is complemented by the STLD1 line driver IC, completing the PLC communication functionality crucial in smart meter designs. The ST85MM is now available in a compact 7mm x 7mm QFN56 package, making it ideal for use in next-generation multiprotocol smart meters.

ST85MM Empowers Hybrid Communication Solutions

In addition to the ST85MM, STMicroelectronics is one of the first companies to announce that its Base Node has received PRIME 1.4 Hybrid PLC and RF certification. This hybrid communication solution combines the advantages of a power line modem with the S2-LP ultra-low-power RF transceiver, further enhancing smart grid connectivity options. As the energy industry continues to evolve, the role of smart meters is changing, requiring them to support new production and consumption models, and ST's new generation of PLC modems is laying a solid foundation for this.
